Flow rate first, brand second
A newborn needs the slowest nipple the brand sells, usually labeled level 0, level 1, newborn or preemie. This matters more than which bottle you buy, and it is the most common thing people get wrong in week one.
Too fast and milk pours in faster than a newborn can swallow. They cough, splutter, clamp down or fall asleep to escape it, and it looks like bottle refusal. Too slow and they tire themselves out. Start slowest; move up only when they are clearly working too hard. See bottle nipple flow sizes.
Buy small bottles, not big ones
Newborns take small volumes. A 9oz bottle with 2oz in it is awkward to angle, harder to judge, and it will not actually be useful for two months. Buy the 4 or 5oz size first. You will need the larger ones eventually; you do not need them yet.
How many you need in month one
Two, to start, of the same brand. If your baby takes the nipple, go up to four for combination feeding or eight to twelve for exclusive bottle feeding so you can wash once a day. The full arithmetic, by feeding style, is in how many bottles do I need?
What to look for in a newborn bottle
Three parts, ideally
You will wash these eight to twelve times a day in the first weeks. Every extra part is a real cost at that frequency. Vented bottles are worth it for a windy baby and not worth it pre-emptively.
A wide nipple if you are also nursing
Wide and gently sloping asks for a latch closer to the breast. Our breastfed-baby picks go deeper on this.
A shape that fits your warmer
Squat and very wide bottles do not fit many warmer wells, which you find out at the worst possible moment. If you already own a warmer, check first — our warmer picks note which shapes fit.
Hygiene in the first two months
This is the one period where sanitizing daily is genuinely recommended rather than optional. Per CDC guidance, clean feeding items after every use and sanitize them daily if your baby is under two months old, was born premature, or has a weakened immune system. Worth saying plainly
Never microwave a bottle of milk or formula: it heats unevenly and creates hot spots that can scald. Warm in a jug of warm water or a bottle warmer, and always test the temperature on your wrist. A newborn feeding much less than usual, or losing weight, needs a pediatrician the same day.

What size bottle does a newborn need?
The small one, usually 4 or 5oz. A newborn takes small volumes and a large bottle is harder to angle and judge. You will want bigger bottles around three to four months.
Which nipple flow does a newborn use?

Do newborns need anti-colic bottles?
Not by default. If your newborn is genuinely windy, a vented bottle helps. Otherwise the extra parts cost you time you do not have in the first month.
How often do I sterilize bottles for a newborn?
Clean after every feed, and sanitize daily while your baby is under two months old, was born premature, or has a weakened immune system, per CDC guidance.
Can I use the same bottles for formula and breast milk?
