The most expensive chair is not the best chair, and the cheapest is not the worst

The IKEA Antilop costs roughly a tenth of a Tripp Trapp and it is genuinely one of the best high chairs you can own, for one reason: it is a single piece of molded plastic with nothing for food to hide in. You can carry it outside and hose it off. Nobody who has spent twenty minutes picking dried pasta out of a padded five-point harness needs that explained.

What it does not have is a recline, an adjustable footrest, height adjustment, or any useful life past toddlerhood. It is a very good chair for a narrow window. The premium chairs are buying you adjustability and longevity, and whether that is worth the money depends entirely on how many children you plan to put in it.

What actually matters in a high chair

How easy it is to clean, weighted heavily

This is the criterion people underweight when shopping and overweight after a month. Fabric pads with piped seams are the worst offender. Wipe-clean plastic, removable dishwasher-safe trays and as few crevices as possible are what you actually want.

An adjustable footrest

Barely mentioned in marketing and genuinely useful: a baby whose feet dangle has nothing to brace against, and bracing helps with stability and with the mechanics of swallowing. Wooden chairs have it as standard, good mid-price convertibles have it, cheap plastic chairs do not. Between two otherwise similar chairs, take the one with the footplate.

Footprint, measured honestly

Whether it has a tray, and whether you want one

A tray keeps mess contained and keeps the baby slightly apart from the meal. No tray means the child eats at the table with everyone else from the first day, which is the Tripp Trapp philosophy and a real advantage for family meals. Neither is wrong; they are different parenting preferences.

Longevity

A chair used for eighteen months and a chair used for eighteen years are different purchases even at the same price. When you actually need one

Around the time solids start, which the American Academy of Pediatrics puts at about six months — and it is about readiness, not a date. The AAP's own list of physical signs includes sitting with some support in a high chair or feeding seat, holding the head steady, having strong neck muscles and good head support, and opening the mouth at the sight of food.
