What "6-in-1" actually means
Manufacturers count modes generously. A typical six-mode chair is: infant high chair, toddler high chair, infant booster on a dining chair, toddler booster, youth stool, and the two halves used separately as a table-and-chair set. Some of those are genuinely useful and some are arithmetic.
The modes that get used, in our reading of owner feedback:
- Infant and toddler high chair. Obviously. This is the chair's real job for the first two years.
- Booster on a dining chair. Used a lot around two to three, when a child wants to sit where everyone else sits. See high chair vs booster seat.
- Youth stool. Used occasionally and usually not for long.
- The separate table-and-chair configurations. Mostly used once, photographed, and then stored in a garage.
So the honest question is not "how many modes" but "does it work well as a high chair, and will I use the booster mode?" If the answer to both is yes, a convertible saves you a purchase.
What to look for
Whether the seat is wipe-clean or fabric
This is the single biggest difference in daily experience between these chairs. Fabric pads catch food in every seam, and while most are machine washable, you will not wash one every day. A molded plastic seat wipes in ten seconds.
Tray behavior
You want a removable insert that goes in the dishwasher, and a tray that can be taken off one-handed while holding a baby. Trays that need both hands and a twist are a small daily irritation.
An adjustable footrest
Still the underrated feature. Dangling feet have nothing to brace against. The Mockingbird and Tripp Trapp both do this well; several cheaper convertibles skip it.
Storage, or the lack of it
A convertible has spare parts by definition: a booster base, a tray insert, sometimes a second seat. Those parts live somewhere for months at a time. If you have no storage, that is a real argument for a simpler chair.
Weight limits per mode
The stated limits differ between configurations, and they are the thing that actually ends a mode's useful life. Check them against the ages you are planning for.
Worth saying plainly
Harness every time, in every mode, and never use the tray as a restraint — the AAP is explicit about both. Re-check the harness routing every time you reconfigure a convertible chair: that is exactly when straps end up threaded wrong. Recall notices are at CPSC.gov.
