What "anti-colic" really means
Nothing, as a regulated term. Any brand can print it. What it describes in practice is venting: a way of letting air into the bottle to replace the milk leaving it, so your baby is not sucking against a vacuum and swallowing air with every mouthful.
Three designs, in ascending order of effectiveness and washing up:
- A valve in the nipple. Most bottles have one. Fine for a baby who is not especially windy. Three parts.
- A vented base. Air enters at the bottom, away from the milk. MAM's approach: four parts, and the base unscrews so it is easy to scrub.
- An internal vent tube. Dr. Brown's: air is routed to the top of the milk rather than bubbling through it. The most effective, and the most parts.
What a bottle cannot fix
This is the part most round-ups leave out. Colic — the clinical kind, meaning prolonged inconsolable crying in an otherwise healthy baby — does not have a single known cause, and swallowed air is only one candidate. A vented bottle reduces swallowed air. It does not treat colic.
If your baby is crying inconsolably for hours, arching and drawing up their legs, vomiting forcefully, or not gaining weight, that is a pediatrician conversation, and possibly a reflux or allergy one. Buying a fourth brand of bottle instead of making that appointment is the mistake this page exists to prevent.
Worth saying plainly
We are not clinicians. Persistent crying, poor weight gain, forceful vomiting, blood in stool or a baby who seems unwell all need a doctor, not a different bottle.
What to look for
Whether the vent comes out
Dr. Brown's best feature is that the vent is removable. Colic typically eases by around three to four months; when it does, you take the tube out and your five-part bottle becomes a three-part bottle. Being able to stop paying the cleaning cost is genuinely valuable.
Flow rate, again

How you hold the bottle
Tipped too steeply, milk floods and your baby gulps. Held closer to horizontal, with the nipple just full, they control the pace. This costs nothing and often helps more than the bottle does: paced bottle feeding.
Assembly, because it leaks when wrong

Do anti-colic bottles actually work?
They reduce how much air a baby swallows, and the better designs do this measurably. They do not cure colic, which has causes beyond feeding. Expect less wind, not a different baby.

Is gas the same as colic?
No. Gas is common and usually manageable. Colic is a pattern of prolonged inconsolable crying in a healthy baby, and it is a reason to see a pediatrician rather than to shop.
