Why people choose glass
- It does not degrade. No scratching, no clouding, no retained milk smell after months of hot washes. A glass bottle at month nine looks like it did on day one.
- Nothing leaches. This is the main motivation for most buyers. On BPA specifically, the FDA no longer permits BPA-based polycarbonate resins in baby bottles or sippy cups, so a new plastic bottle is not a BPA risk — but if you would rather avoid plastic in contact with warm milk entirely, glass is the straightforward way.
- It handles heat properly. Boiling, steam sterilizing, repeated warming: glass does not care.
- It resells and hands down. Glass bottles survive multiple children.
The real downsides, stated plainly
Weight. A full glass bottle is noticeably heavier. This matters for one-handed feeding at 3am, for a diaper bag, and for the point at which your baby wants to hold their own bottle.
Breakage. Kitchen floors are tile and concrete. A sleeve helps a great deal; nothing makes glass unbreakable.
Cost. Several times a plastic bottle, per bottle, and you need several.

Borosilicate vs ordinary glass matters
Not all glass is the same. Borosilicate glass handles sudden temperature change far better than ordinary soda-lime glass, which is what makes it the right choice for a bottle that will go from freezer to warm water. If you freeze milk in glass, borosilicate is not optional — and leave headroom, because liquid expands as it freezes. Storage times are in our storage table.
Warming a glass bottle
Two practical notes. First, glass takes slightly longer to warm through than plastic, so expect to add a little time. Second, not every warmer well fits a squat glass bottle — the wide, short shapes are the awkward ones. We cover which warmers cope in bottle warmers for glass bottles. Worth saying plainly
Check glass bottles for chips every time you wash them, especially around the rim, and discard any bottle that is chipped or cracked. Recall notices for feeding products are posted at CPSC.gov.

Are glass baby bottles safer than plastic?
On leaching, glass removes the question entirely. On breakage, plastic is safer. New mainstream plastic bottles are not a BPA issue per the FDA, so this is a preference rather than a safety emergency.
Can you sterilize glass baby bottles in a dishwasher?
You can clean them in a dishwasher, and a hot cycle with a heated drying or sanitizing setting helps kill more germs, per CDC guidance. Check the manufacturer's instructions for the specific bottle, and secure small parts in a closed basket.
Can I freeze breast milk in glass bottles?
In borosilicate glass, yes, leaving headroom for expansion. Ordinary soda-lime glass is more likely to crack. Freezer times are in the storage table.
Do glass bottles fit in bottle warmers?

Is a hybrid bottle like the Chicco Duo still plastic-free?
