Breast pumps, explained without the jargon

If you are buying your first pump, start here

Breast pump marketing assumes you already speak the language. You do not, and nobody hands you a glossary at the hospital. So before the rankings, here is the short version of the whole category.

There are three kinds of pump, and the differences are simpler than the packaging suggests:

• Traditional double electric. A motor on the table, tubes to two collection bottles. Strongest and most tunable, fewest parts to wash, cheapest for the performance. This is the workhorse, and it is what insurance usually covers. Our first-pump ranking starts here for a reason.
• Wearable in-bra pump. The whole machine, battery included, sits in your bra. You put a shirt on and walk away. Slightly less output, more parts to wash, more money — and if the alternative is not pumping at all because you cannot sit still for twenty minutes, it is worth every penny. See the wearable ranking.
• Manual hand pump. A handle and a funnel. Costs a tenth as much, needs no power, and is genuinely the right tool for occasional pumping, for collecting colostrum in the first days, and for engorgement. The manual pump picks are the most under-bought items in this category.

What to buy first

If you are pumping daily, buy a traditional double electric first. If you are going back to work, buy a wearable first. If you are not sure you will pump at all, buy a manual pump for twenty-odd dollars and decide later. That is the whole decision tree, and we expand it in wearable vs traditional breast pump.

One step before any of that, though: call your insurance. In the US a breast pump is frequently covered in whole or in part, usually a standard double electric rather than a wearable. The thing that decides whether pumping works

It is not the brand. It is the flange — the funnel-shaped part that sits against your breast. Too large and you pull in tissue that should not be moving. Too small and it pinches. Either way it hurts, you get less milk, and almost everyone blames the pump.

What else you actually need

The pump is not the whole purchase, and the extras are where people get caught out. A hands-free pumping bra. Two or three spare sets of pump parts, so you are not washing between every single session. Storage bags or bottles, labeled with dates. And a way to clean everything, because CDC guidance is to clean every part that touches milk after every use, and to sanitize daily if your baby is under two months old, was born premature, or has a weakened immune system.

What we will not tell you
