Why glass is different in a warmer
Three practical differences, none of them dealbreakers, all of them worth knowing.
It takes longer. Glass conducts heat differently from thin polypropylene, so the same warmer on the same setting will leave a glass bottle slightly cooler. Add time, and test on your wrist rather than trusting the timer.
Thermal shock is real, but manageable. Borosilicate glass, which is what the good bottles are made from, handles sudden temperature change well. Even so, taking a bottle straight from the freezer into hot water is asking for trouble. Thaw in the fridge first, then warm — which is what CDC guidance recommends for milk quality anyway.
Fit is the real problem. Glass bottles tend to be a little wider than their plastic equivalents for the same capacity, because the walls are thicker. That is enough to make a narrow warmer well a bad fit.
How to check fit before you buy
- Measure the widest diameter of your bottle, including any silicone sleeve.
- Check the warmer's stated well diameter or maximum bottle size in its manual, which is usually published online.
- Check the well depth too. A tall 9oz glass bottle can stick out far enough that the warming water does not reach the milk line.
- If you use a Lifefactory-style sleeve, decide whether you will warm with it on. Sleeves add width and slow warming further.
The method that always works
A jug or bowl of warm — not boiling — water, bottle standing in it for a few minutes, swirled gently, tested on the inside of your wrist. Worth saying plainly
Never microwave milk in glass or anything else. Check glass bottles for chips every time you wash them, especially around the rim, and retire any bottle that is chipped. Recall notices are at CPSC.gov.
