Why the footrest is the most underrated feature in the category
A child sitting with their feet dangling has nothing to brace against. Bracing the feet helps stability, and a stable trunk is the position you want for eating. It is also simply more comfortable: try eating a meal on a bar stool with your feet in the air and you will get the idea within about four minutes.
None of which matters if the footplate is in the wrong place. The whole value of the feature is that the feet are supported, and a ledge fixed for a three-year-old does nothing for a six-month-old whose legs are half the length.
The one test to apply
Can the footplate move without moving the seat? That question separates the two kinds of product sold as "with footrest":
- Independently adjustable. Seat height and footplate height are set separately. This is what a wooden grow-with-me chair does, and it is the only version that fits a child at every stage.
- Stepped positions. Two or three fixed slots for the footplate, as on the Graco Blossom. Coarser, and generally good enough.
- A moulded ledge. Part of the frame, not adjustable at all. Present on many cheap chairs and on the IKEA Antilop's aftermarket accessories. It is somewhere for a toddler to put their feet, and nothing more.
How to set the height once you own one
Aim for the child sitting with hips, knees and ankles all at roughly right angles, feet flat on the plate, thighs supported by the seat. If the knees are higher than the hips, the plate is too high. If the toes only just reach, it is too low. Reset it every couple of months in the first year, because they grow faster than you will remember to check.
If the chair you already own has no footrest
Do not buy a second chair over this. Two workable fixes:
- A box or a low stool. Sturdy, non-slip, and the right height. Fine for a child old enough not to push off it, which is roughly the age at which they are also old enough to tip a chair by doing so — so use it at a table, not on a freestanding chair.
- A strap-on footrest accessory. Sold for the Antilop and other popular chairs. Check the fit is genuinely snug; a footrest that slides under load is worse than none.

What a footrest costs you
Adjustable-footplate chairs are mostly wooden, mostly premium, and mostly have no recline. That is the trade: a chair that fits precisely at every stage, or a chair that reclines for a young baby. Worth saying plainly
A footrest is also a pushing-off surface, which is the one safety caveat. AAP guidance is to keep a high chair away from walls, tables and counters a child can push against, and that applies to a child bracing hard on a footplate too: harness every time, never rely on the tray to hold a child in, and never leave a child unattended. Check CPSC recalls before using a second-hand wooden chair, and re-tighten wooden chair fixings every few months.

Common questions
Why does a high chair need a footrest?
Because a child with dangling feet has nothing to brace against, and bracing helps stability while eating. It is also simply more comfortable for a long meal. The feature only works if the footplate is at the right height for that child.
What is the best high chair with an adjustable footrest?

Does the IKEA Antilop have a footrest?

How high should a high chair footrest be?
Set it so the child's hips, knees and ankles are all at roughly right angles with the feet flat. Knees higher than hips means it is too high; toes barely reaching means too low. Recheck every couple of months in the first year.
Can I add a footrest to a high chair that does not have one?
Yes. A strap-on accessory sized for your chair, or a sturdy non-slip box or stool at a table. Avoid anything that can slide under load, and do not use a loose box under a freestanding chair a child could push off.
